In our Marvel with a Difference series, YouTube host and Marvel expert Sebastian looks back in time before Spider-Man and X-Men and presents, in chronological order, the unknown Marvel films that were made in the years and decades before. Did you know that there was another movie about the famous Marvel mutants before «X-Men»?
It’s called » Generation X «, was released in 1996 and was originally intended as a pilot for an «X-Men» TV series, which didn’t materialize — and that pretty much says everything there is to know about the quality of Generation X , which has now gone down in Marvel annals as a pilot without a sequel.
This is Generation X
Like the later X-Men films, Generation X focuses on the Xavier Institute and the pilot was even filmed at the same location: Hatley Castle in Canada. However, Xavier alias Professor X does not appear himself, instead the young students (including Jubilee and Skin) are instructed by Emma Frost ( Finola Hughes ) and Sean Cassidy alias Banshee ( Jeremy Ratchford ).
The villain of the film is the inventor Russel Tresh ( Matt Frewer ), who would like to have superpowers himself and wants to penetrate the dreams of the young mutants at school via the dream dimension…
«Nightmare On Elm Street» meets «X-Men»
That somehow sounds a bit like » Nightmare On Elm Street » and Freddy Krueger and in fact Jack Sholder is also the director of «Nightmare On Elm Street 2» responsible for «Generation X». However, the mutant adventure never comes close to the class of the cult horror series, according to Sebastian.
Uninteresting conflicts, lots of fart jokes, lame action and hardly any superhero scenes — you can tell «Generation X» unfortunately at any time that this is a TV episode for which very little money was available. Only Matt Frewer stands out because he really gives the monkey sugar as a villain.
