The 1980s nostalgia wave continues to roll. The retro trend is particularly evident in the horror genre. Like The Guest, ES, Summer Of 84, The Final Girls or the Netflix series Stranger Things, Where The Scary Things Are is clearly inspired by 1980s cinema. However, screenwriter and director Harrison Smith relies on a rather dark twist.
As the first trailer for «Where The Scary Things Are» makes clear, the youth adventures » Stand By Me » and » The Goonies » particularly influenced the film. The highlight of the whole thing: Harrison Smith takes the two classics from the 1980s and reinterprets them as a kind of horror film.
This is «Where The Scary Things Are»
The horror begins when Ayla ( Selina Flange ) and her high school friends encounter an injured creature at a disused amusement park in the middle of nowhere. You decide to take them with you and feed them up, but the situation quickly gets out of control. When they start making videos with the mutant, the gang’s hunger for likes grows.
The gang films the beast more and more often in murderous actions. When a boy realizes that Ayla is using the monster’s cruel violence to satiate her own thirst for revenge, he threatens to inform the authorities. But will he be too late and won’t he be able to save his friends in time?
In addition to Selina Flange, the cast also includes Paul Cottman , Michael Cervantes , Peter Cote and Quinn Andrew Fickes . It is not yet clear when «Where The Scary Things Are» will be released in Germany. The horror film opens in the United States on June 28th.
