Was the long wait for Stranger Things Season 4 worth it? That’s what the reviews say about the new episodes on Netflix — Series News

When the first part of the fourth season » Stranger Things » finally appears on Netflix on May 27, 2022 , season 3 will be almost three years ago. Regardless of what the reviews say, any fans who have been eagerly awaiting a replenishment are sure to be eagerly aching for the new installments of the hit series.

At this point, we don’t want to withhold the first press reviews that are gradually finding their way onto the internet…

The biggest «Stranger Things» season — but also the best?

From almost all previous reviews of Stranger Things, it’s clear that Netflix and the Duffer brothers behind the series haven’t over-promised when teasing Season 4 as the biggest of the mystery hits. With several parallel storylines that only gradually come together again, the new season is indeed of enormous proportions, which is also reflected in the length of the episode .

Even if the two and a half hour XXL finale of the season has not yet been shown to the press in advance, after the first seven episodes, each lasting between 60 and 100 minutes, there seems to be disagreement as to whether these epic dimensions really make sense for development of history, mythology and characters.

There are no real slats to read, but a few less enthusiastic articles still push the current rating down a little. However, since most reviews are positive, the fourth season of «Stranger Things» ends up on the review collection site Metacriticwith a good 72 out of 100 points (from 13 reviews listed so far, as of May 23, 2022, 3 p.m.).

Even scarier than the first three seasons

Pure excitement can be read from the series experts at website TVLine — but with a caveat that echoes through some of the other articles: Don’t expect Season 4 to reinvent the Stranger Things wheel. Instead, the usual ingredients are once again used, but they still work perfectly. After all, that should be exactly what the fans are looking forward to. «It’s thrilling, exciting, funny and scary as hell ,» is the euphoric conclusion at TVLine .

«Game Of Thrones» is a joke: «Stranger Things 4» is one of the most expensive seasons of all time

The horror elements are also praised by Empire magazine , which calls season 4 the scariest season of the series , although a small critical side note notes that there are a bit too many characters. Meanwhile, at The AV Club , the scope of the narrative is viewed positively across the board: «The leisurely pace never leads to dull moments. ‘Stranger Things’ still manages to add compelling backstories to its well-established universe.”

The Collider side agrees and also notes that the fourth season is a great gift for the loyal fans of the series , not least thanks to the deep dive into mythology. And for Entertainment Weekly , the lavish and smart new season is also an improvement over the previous two seasons, which were not only well received there (and also by some fans).

Or just a formulaic product of the Netflix algorithm?

The industry journals The Hollywood Reporter and Variety also talk about the most extensive «Stranger Things» season, but they are far less impressed here, also because the different storylines would not convince everyone equally:

«[It] is the biggest, scariest, and most ambitious season of Stranger Things yet, but also the least charming, funny, and imaginative,» reads THR , while Variety writes, «The problem is that every story arc (except for the one surrounding Eleven’s Origin story) becomes less compelling the further away he gets from Hawkins.»

And IndieWire , which has its most negative review yet, goes so far as to dismiss Stranger Things season 4 as another soulless throwing together of the standard ingredients that Netflix’s algorithm predicted audiences were particularly fond of in other titles on the streaming service – an accusation that Netflix productions often have to put up with: “Season 4 feels like it was developed to provide good data but not quality entertainment. […] Any remaining difference is replaced by formulaicity.”

You can judge the new episodes for yourself in a few days: The first part of the fourth season «Stranger Things» (with seven episodes) will be released on Netflix on May 27, 2022. Just in time for the start, there is also our assessment of the new adventures of Eleven ( Millie Bobby Brown ) and Co. Part 2 of the season (with the remaining two feature-length episodes) will follow on July 1st.
