Myths have always enlivened the film landscape. However, there are cases where one secretly hopes that they really are just legends. For example, in the films listed here, in which there are actually supposed to be real (!) corpses in front of the camera. Whether that’s really the case or whether it’s just a damn effective sales ploy by the respective studio cannot be fully clarified in the end.
Even we at FILMSTARTS cannot make it clear at this point whether the films we present to you here present authentic bodies of dead people. However, the myth-making that has wrapped itself around these already extraordinary works makes for an even more intense viewing experience — although one has to admit that it would be kind of in bad taste to display truly real corpses on camera…
Unrest (2006)
“ Unrest ” is an independently produced horror shocker from 2006. If the film doesn’t mean anything to you, that’s no big deal: you really don’t have to have seen it. However, the low-budget stunner made a name for itself for a short time when it was announced at the time as the «first horror film to use real corpses» . «Unrest» takes place largely in a morgue, where a group of medical students practice their craft on the dead — until the strange events pile up through a horribly disfigured woman.
It is questionable whether the corpses that can be seen here in «Unrest» are really real. In any case, the dead bodies look damn authentic. The low production budget also plays into this circumstance, which gives the film an even rawer, more genuine character. If, despite all the warnings, you still want to watch the film, you may be lucky to find the DVD in a junk box at a large electronics store. At Amazon and Co., however, it is completely out of stock.
Poltergeist (1982)
Is Unrest the first horror film to feature real corpses? The creators behind “ Poltergeist ” claim otherwise! In the iconic pool scene from Tobe Hooper ‘s horror classic , where JoBeth Williams is dragged into the muddy pit by the undead, no one may be drawn out from behind the stove anymore. However, this scene takes on a whole new spooky dimension when you learn that the effects team apparently used real skeletons for the shoot.

Whether this is really the case remains to be speculated. However, many people assumed the film was cursed after hearing that real skeletons were used for shock effects. This curse theory was also bolstered by the fact that five (!) actors from the film died under tragic circumstances after the end of shooting. You can read more about this here.
