Ungekürztes FSK-18-Highlight neu im Heimkino Dieser legendär-brutale Kult-Klassiker stand lange sogar auf dem Index

capelight pictures

After we reported last October that Capelight Pictures will once again publish “ Battle Royale ” (for the first time in 4K), a good six months later the time has finally come: The ruthless cult classic about a number of young people , who find themselves in a perfidious game of life and death on a lonely island, are now also available in Ultra HD for the first time – and how!

Befitting its status, the distributor, which is known for its diverse program consisting primarily of genre films, has once again done its utmost to present fans with a new edition that leaves nothing to be desired — and is also worthwhile if, for example, you have already bought the Blu-ray of the long indexed adventure horror shocker from Japan at home: In addition to a strictly limited 4-disc edition in the media book, the two 4K discs including both film versions (uncut theatrical version & extended cut) are also available as a cheap economy version. So if you already have the Blu-ray media book or the Ultimate Edition at home and are actually quite happy with it, but still want to experience the film in the best possible picture and sound quality, the so-called PocketPac is the right choice:

We took a close look at the new edition available exclusively in the Capelight shop in the media book at the start of sales and tell you why the 4-disc edition is worthwhile for fans — even if you already have one or two older releases on the shelf standing…

«Battle Royale» in 4K: eye-catcher on the shelf

As is so often the case, it is the look that determines the first impression. And here, in the case of «Battle Royale», one could almost be a little disappointed at first glance. The product image shows a well-known cover motif, except that the 4K version comes in red (compared to the black Blu-ray edition). But once you have the two variants side by side in front of you, the real difference becomes really clear:

With the new edition, «Battle Royale» not only shines in new splendor on the TV, but also on the shelf. While the Blu-ray version was once black, matte and therefore quite subtle, the 4K edition with its shiny red design is a real eye-catcher on the shelf.

«Battle Royale» in 4K: eye-catcher on TV

Above all, of course, there is the question of the revised picture and sound quality, which in the end is the main argument for or against a (new) purchase. For the German UHD premiere, Capelight used the extensive restoration of the British amateur label Arrow Video — and that means, as always: The film has never looked better.

Because Arrow worked with the original negative to get the best out of it, especially in terms of image quality. That is exactly what is not so easy with a film like «Battle Royale» — a rather cheap Japanese production, which after all is more than 20 years old and lives not least from its gloomy, almost colorless look. So you shouldn’t be prepared for an aha experience like the 4K version of » Matrix «, which is about the same age, since the «Battle Royale» source material is simply far less impressive on the one hand, but on the other hand the film naturally comes across as much sadder and more desolate ( both content and visual).

In view of this , everything that seems possible at least at the moment has really been pulled out here — and above all in a way that would not falsify the look or atmosphere of the film in any way. Accordingly, the jump from the Blu-ray to the 4K Blu-ray seems to be small at first glance. But «Battle Royale» should not become a brightly colored spectacle due to the UHD transfer. It remains the dark, dystopian horror trip that its many fans love so much for — only with a cleaner, sharper and, thanks to Dolby Vision, more lively image. And with that, the new edition lives up to all the expectations one can have of a 4K transfer.
