The 1998 Oscars were impressively dominated by Titanic . James Cameron’s mix of tragic love story and epochal catastrophe drama took home eleven awards. Previously, only the monumental classic “ Ben Hur ” (and later “ The Lord of the Rings — The Return of the King ”) succeeded in doing this. In two main categories, however, a much smaller tragicomedy successfully resisted.
Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt both deservedly swept up the Best Actor and Best Actress Oscars for their roles in As Good As It Gets — also beating out Titanic stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio (although the latter would later go on to vote for «The Revenant» award-winning DiCaprio didn’t even make it into the nominees). In fact, since then, no other film has managed to win the trophies in both leading actor categories.
