+++ Opinion +++
After the series hit » 21 Jump Street » and leading roles in cult films such as » Edward Scissorhands » or » Cry Baby «, Johnny Depp was of course no longer a stranger in 1995. However, the heartthrob at the time was still a bit far from absolute superstar status, which he later owed above all to the “ Pirates of the Caribbean ” series. And so Depp’s films were not a sure-fire success at the box office in the 90s, as the thriller » Against the Time » showed.
With a box office of just eight million dollars (with a budget of around 33 million), «Against the Times» flopped so much in the USA that in many other countries — including Germany — a theatrical release was completely avoided and released the film straight to home theater instead. The genre highlight would have deserved so much more attention back then — which is why I would like to draw your attention to the TV broadcast on April 29, 2022 at 8:15 p.m. on Tele 5 .
Only abridged on TV today, but…
Unfortunately, there is one drop of bitterness: Since «Gegen die Zeit» is approved for ages 16 and over and films with the same FSK seal are only allowed to be shown uncut on television from 10 p.m., Tele 5 shows it only slightly cut. There is also a repeat without cuts, but only on the night of May 4th to 5th at 2:05 a.m. Alternatively, the thriller can of course also be purchased from providers such as Amazon:

Although we are always fully convinced that films should be enjoyed in their uncut version, I can advise you with a clear conscience to give «Against the Times» a chance in this version as well , if you still watch the film at all does not know. Since it does not depend on any peaks of violence, it does not fail to have an effect even in this way. I, too, fell in love with “Gegen die Zeit” (against the time when I was quite ignorant of such editing confusion) during the many early prime-time TV broadcasts…
That’s what «Time Management» is about
After his ex-wife’s funeral, accountant Gene Watson (Johnny Depp) and his baby daughter Lynn ( Courtney Chase ) arrive at the Los Angeles Central Station. It doesn’t take long there until the two are picked up by supposed cops ( Christopher Walken and Roma Maffia ). However, they quickly turn out to be unscrupulous kidnappers and blackmailers with a clear mission for their victim: the simple office worker is to kill the governor of California for them within the next 90 minutes. If he doesn’t, his daughter will die.
A relentless race against time begins for Gene, in which he soon finds out that he can hardly trust anyone. Can he and his daughter escape the nightmare?
A highly exciting real-time highlight
«Ninety minutes. Six bullets. No choice,» emblazoned the ominous tagline on my Against Time DVD on the shelf — and it basically sums up the film’s premise and appeal very well. Action and concept are as simple as they are effective — not least because the thriller runs in real time, so the running time corresponds exactly to the action time.
Cult film director John Badham (“Saturday Night Fever”, “War Games”, “Number 5 is alive!”) proved years before the series hit “ 24 ” that this trick can produce a maximum of nail-biting thrill leaves. The oppressive time pressure and the associated desperation of the main character can also be felt by the viewers in every scene, there are almost no breaks here.
Even today, it’s difficult for me to escape the pull of «Gegen die Zeit», especially since it’s also really refreshing — even for a long-time Johnny Depp fan like me — that the actually so versatile actor isn’t seen in the umpteenth decal of his later legendary Jack Sparrow persona.
» Against the Time » may not be a masterpiece, but it is and will definitely remain a no-frills and unjustly forgotten highlight of the suspense cinema of the 90s.
