“ The Essex Serpent ” is set in an isolated 19th century village in the English county of the same name. This is where the inquisitive, clever and stubborn widow Cora Seaborne ( Claire Danes ), who comes from London, ends up, who wants to investigate reports about a mythical sea snake in her new home.
Upon arrival, Cora befriends local clergyman Will Ransome ( Tom Hiddleston ), who quickly develops amorous feelings for her as well. But not even he can protect his new acquaintance from incurring the displeasure of the superstitious locals. After a local tragedy, they are convinced that Cora would have first attracted the mystical creature, which is said to bring bad luck and death, through her investigations.

The Essex Serpent premieres May 13, 2022 worldwide and exclusively on the Apple TV+ streaming service . There will be a double episode at the premiere. This is followed by another 60-minute episode every Friday.
Claire Danes instead of Keira Knightley
The series is based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Perry , which was first published in 2016 and has also been translated into German. Ali & Ava and Dark River director Clio Barnard directed the first season . The screenplays came from Anna Symon («Deep Water», «Mrs. Wilson»). Both women also acted as executive producers.
After Keira Knightley was initially slated to play the female lead, Claire Danes took over after her exit shortly before production began. The New Yorker is best known as the star of the globally successful spy series «Homeland».
