The first votes for “ Top Gun 2: Maverick ” were already available at the end of April 2022 and, as is usual with such preliminary reactions, they were very euphoric. But apparently «Top Gun 2» is one of the rather rare cases in which the advance praise is not exaggerated: The first US reviews of «Top Gun: Maverick» are absolutely outstanding.
On the review collection platform Rotten Tomatoes , «Top Gun 2» currently has 100 percent positive reviews — and even more important: with an extremely strong average rating of 8.6 out of 10 points. A total of 43 reviews were counted. Metacritic currently has a really good 81 out of 100 points from 34 reviews (as of May 12, 2022, 5 p.m.).
One of the best sequels of all time
If you read through the reviews that have been published so far, the authors almost overdo themselves with their praise:
Collider ‘s Ross Bonaime speaks of a film that could be «one of the best sequels of all time» . Deadline ‘s Pete Hammond sees Tom Cruise in the role of his life and Hollywood at the height of his creation . And the Telegraph ‘s Robbie Collin thought Top Gun 2 was the best studio action film in years .
One of the best blockbusters of recent years, one of the best sequels of all time, better in every respect than the first » Top Gun » from 1986 — these or similar formulations can actually be found in almost all reviews of «Maverick».
A must in the cinema!
The same applies to the urgent recommendation to see «Top Gun 2» in the cinema, on the largest possible screen . This is the only way that the handmade action scenes, praised in almost all reviews, and the booming jet engine sound can unfold their full effect, for which director Joseph Kosinski , who previously worked with Cruise on «Oblivion», is again responsible.
But «Top Gun: Maverick» is not just spectacle. In fact, some critics also emphasize the surprisingly emotional side of the film , which, in addition to action and suspense, is said to move you to tears again and again.
