Tom Cruise as Iron Man in the MCU: This is a rumor that predates 2008’s » Iron Man » because Cruise was actually considered to be an actor for Tony Stark at one point, and it’s been blown up every now and then. But especially before » Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness «, many fans were really 100% sure that Cruise would appear as Iron Man.
The reason for this was, on the one hand, the premise of the film, which not only makes the appearance of alternative versions of well-known characters possible, but almost necessary — the multiverse in the title already indicates this. On the other hand, many even believed that they had discovered Iron Man in the trailer for «Doctor Strange 2» (after the theatrical release, however, it is now finally clear that it was Lashana Lynch as a Captain Marvel variant).

But what about the rumors about Tom Cruise? Was an appearance by the superstar as Iron Man possibly filmed and cut before Doctor Strange 2 hit theaters? After all, there are Ultron drones and an empty chair in the Illuminati, which could indicate the presence of an Iron Man in the Illuminati universe.
‘Doctor Strange 2’ Author: Tom Cruise Was Never In The Movie!
In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine , «Doctor Strange 2» screenwriter Michael Waldron stated unequivocally: «There is no footage of Tom Cruise that was cut!» In other words, no scenes with Tom Cruise were shot.
In fact, Waldron was aware that Cruise had been interested in the role years before Iron Man. But it wasn’t until many fans wanted an appearance that he spoke to MCU mastermind Kevin Feige , as he revealed to Rolling Stone . «I think Tom Cruise is great and at one point I said to Kevin, ‘Can we get Tom Cruise as Iron Man?’
Waldron didn’t tell Rolling Stone exactly what Kevin Feige replied, but explained that, to his knowledge, Cruise had never been asked. «I just don’t think that was ever an option because he’s not available.»
So is Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness a horror movie or not?
Of course, as one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, Cruise already has a busy schedule, but at the time in question he was busy filming mammoth » Mission: Impossible 7 » and » Mission: Impossible 8 «. Also, Tom Cruise is his own brand, very keen on having full control over projects with him. Cameos are therefore now difficult to imagine — in contrast to earlier appearances. But when he surprisingly appeared in » Austin Powers in Goldmember «, he was still in a completely different phase of his career, with » Tropic Thunder » it was a deliberate PR stunt to distract from negative headlines.
