In 1996, “ Twister ” swept through cinemas around the world like a hurricane. With a gross of around 500 million dollars (with a budget of around 90 million), the disaster film only had to admit defeat to Roland Emmerich’s smash hit » Independence Day » and thus ended up at number 2 in the annual cinema charts — and thus even ahead of Action- Hits like » Mission: Impossible » and » The Rock «.
The reviews of «Twister» were rather subdued at the time, but over the years the bad-weather blockbuster has been celebrated by more and more fans and ultimately also by parts of the press for what it is: a bombastic and often tongue-in-cheek action-adventure Fun with Oscar-nominated effects that are still worth seeing , in which you don’t even get the opportunity to think about the outrageous story and any logic gaps in the midst of the constantly high tempo and all the cars, boats, houses and cows (!) flying around.

That’s what «Twister» is about
Once upon a time, Bill Harding ( Bill Paxton ) belonged to a group of tornado hunters who repeatedly put themselves in great danger to research the devastating storms. But those times are behind him. He actually only returns to his native Oklahoma so that his estranged wife Jo ( Helen Hunt ) signs the divorce papers.
On site, however, he not only finds out that Jo and her team have put the tornado early warning system he developed into practice, but also that the region is being hit by a devastating series of hurricanes. It doesn’t take long for Bill to get Twister fever again and he and Jo start to bond again…
Illustrious team in front of and behind the camera
The fact that «Twister» still offers such entertaining popcorn entertainment today is of course also thanks to the experienced team behind the film. While the screenplay was co-written by «Jurassic Park» author Michael Crichton , action specialist Jan de Bont («Speed») took the director’s chair.
But a well-known squad also gathered in front of the camera. In addition to Bill Paxton («Aliens») and Philip Seymour Hoffman («Capote»), who unfortunately died far too early, there are also Oscar winner Helen Hunt («It doesn’t get any better than that») and cult star Cary Elwes (» The Prince’s Bride», «Saw») the honor.
