When realizing his own screenplay for » Doomsday — Day of Revenge «, director Neil Marshall had a really handsome budget at his disposal for the first time with a reported 30 million US dollars. The Brit, who was honored early on with hard-hitting horror pearls like “ Dog Soldiers ” and above all “ The Descent – Abyss of Horror ”, gave that out in order to hit the dizzyingly bloody and brutal banger with the end-time cracker.
In his 4-star review of the thriller, which was released in cinemas in 2008 , author Carsten Baumgardt expressly praised Marshall’s uncompromising approach to the depiction of violence and the associated, consistent whistle on suitability for the mainstream.
Our reviewer calls «Doomsday» an atmospheric trash-fest for genre fans to celebrate. Some details of the plot wouldn’t make any sense and otherwise the logic wouldn’t be all that far either. However, Marshall distills an entertainment cocktail whose purity sets standards. There would be no bothersome hints of pretension or subtext — just action, pace and unleashed madness.
The third feature film by the filmmaker, who was nominated for an Emmy a few years later for his work on the hit series «Game Of Thrones» and who also gave us works such as » Centurion » and » Hellboy — Call Of Darkness «, is shown today, June 9th 2022 at 10:05 p.m. on Tele 5.
There’s only one catch: «Doomsday — Day of Revenge» has never been published in Germany in its entirety. Even in the FSK 18 version, a whole lot of violent spikes and gore effects were removed compared to the R-rated version from the USA. The fact that today’s TV broadcast is an even more abbreviated 16+ version (FSK 18 films are not allowed on TV before 11pm) only makes matters worse. Overall missing according to cut reportsA whopping 11 minutes and 40 seconds!
Alternatively, you can stream the FSK 18 version on Amazon Prime Video ‘s Filmtastic channel . As already mentioned, it is also shortened, but it is the least mutilated version that is currently available in Germany:

From the British government’s point of view, Scotland can no longer be saved due to an epidemic rampant there caused by a deadly virus. So the country and its people are being left to their own devices and sealed off from the rest of the UK. 30 years later, the virus suddenly appears in London. Now is the time to act quickly and efficiently.
The British Prime Minister ( Alexander Siddig ) orders his ruthless special adviser Canaris ( David O’Hara ) to immediately send an elite military unit to Glasgow to search for a cure for the virus. Surprisingly, there are still signs of human life there.
In Glasgow, the team led by Major Eden Sinclair ( Rhona Mitra ) is tasked with finding the once renowned virus expert Kane ( Malcolm McDowell ). But in order to get to his last known whereabouts, the government squad must first cross the contaminated and devastated area behind the border wall. A brutal cannibal subculture has established itself there, unnoticed by London, which first has to be fought or survived…
