After the relatively cheaply produced surprise hit » District 9 » from 2009, the South African director Neill Blomkamp quickly acquired the reputation of a sci-fi prodigy — and so it is not surprising that Hollywood soon entrusted him with expensive blockbusters. Blomkamp then shot the science fiction action film » Elysium » with Matt Damon in the leading role for around 115 million US dollars. The result looks fantastic, but it also has its flaws – of which the director is only too aware…

«Elysium» is absolutely spectacular — but only in terms of optics. In the FILMSTARTS review, we rave about the stunning design and fantastic looks, especially when it comes to the eponymous space station. And the action scenes are also varied. But the great weakness of «Elysium» is the screenplay.
Blomkamp on «Elysium»: «Crap»
If you not only want to immerse yourself in a breathtaking sci-fi world, but also want to be inspired by a gripping and coherent story, you are on the wrong track with «Elysium». Blomkamp’s draft of the future is simply too thin in terms of content, the screenplay remains superficial and offers the stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster , who nevertheless act confidently, no room for nuances. And the director knows that too.
Two years after Elysium hit theaters, Blomkamp said he screwed up on the film and it’s still bothering him . The story of «Elysium» was just not the right one — despite the great basic idea. The script and story just weren’t good enough and ultimately the whole film wasn’t good enough either.
Neill Blomkamp has returned to the subject in interviews over the years, including stating that he wishes he could make another film set in the world of Elysium because he believed he could do better. But as we know: An «Elysium 2» never happened.
