An old-school action thriller

There’s no question that Nimrod Antal and Robert Rodriguez ‘s «Predators» also has its flaws, such as gaping logic holes, some curious miscasts, and a plot that could easily be summed up on a beer mat. However, if you overlook that, you get a thoroughly atmospheric sci-fi action here, which follows in the tradition of the original «Predator» without harming it.
Above all, director Antal knows not to waste any time and goes straight to the heart of the matter . He drops the audience along with the increasingly desperate protagonists in an impenetrable jungle where the Predator is the boss of the ring. Antal doesn’t shy away from going bloody to the point and is nonetheless fascinated by expanding the mythology of the extraterrestrial trophy hunter, who not only acts more cleverly but also more sadistically in his hunting ground.

In the official FILMSTARTS review , too, «Predators» received 3 out of 5 stars. The conclusion is very appropriate: “Director Nimrod Antal and producer Robert Rodriguez have given the ‘Predator’ franchise a whimsical rejuvenation with autologous blood doping. […] In the end, the new edition doesn’t reach the level and coolness of the original ‘Predator’, but the new chapter is still fun.”
I can only agree wholeheartedly: If you are in the mood for handmade sci-fi action that doesn’t degenerate into a CGI orgy or has to force your story to be humorous, like Shane Black did with his weak «Predator: Upgrade” will get their money’s worth with “Predators”. Certainly not a masterpiece, but a respectable declaration of love for 1980s action cinema.
That’s what «Predators» is about
Eight elite fighters gradually come to their senses in free fall. Hanging on a small parachute, they race towards a jungle landscape. Mercenary Royce ( Adrien Brody ), Mossad sniper Isabelle ( Alice Braga ), doctor Edwin ( Topher Grace ), rapist Stanz ( Walton Goggins ), Russian soldier Nikolai ( Oleg Taktarov ), samurai Hanzo ( Louis Ozawa Changchien ), African warlord Mombasa ( Mahershala Ali ) and drug cartel gangster Cuchillo ( Danny Trejo ) are stuck somewhere in the middle of nowhere.
Mutual distrust is intense from the start, but after it’s clear that a mysterious threat is after them, the motley crew decides to band together, willy-nilly. But their surprise is even greater when they discover that they are no longer on Earth and have apparently been targeted by an alien species that is larger, stronger and far more dangerous. A bloody struggle of life and death begins…
