True crime documentaries are one of the pillars on which Netflix has built and continues to build its success. The best examples of this are probably «Tiger King», «The Tinder Swindler», «Amanda Knox», «Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story» or serial killer formats such as «Ted Bundy: Self-Portrait of a Serial Killer».
Now, on May 11, 2022, the internationally known as » Our Father » will start with «Unser Vater — Dr. Cline» a new true crime documentary that prepares a particularly spectacular and sensational case. It’s all about a doctor who used his own sperm to fulfill his patients’ desire to have children. You can get an impression of it in the first trailer.
Abuse of trust in a league of its own
While the field of artificial insemination represents one of the greatest achievements in the history of modern medicine and helps people to find happiness as a parent and family, in 2014 this topic was suddenly ill-fated. The reason for this was Doctor Donald Cline. He took advantage of countless people’s desire to have children and used his own sperm for fertilization — without the women and spouses concerned being informed.
The case started rolling in 2014 through Jacoba Ballard. As an only child, conceived through artificial insemination, she always wished for siblings. As a result, she started a DNA query and found out that year that she had seven (!) half-siblings. As she researched further, she uncovered an unbelievable truth — and in doing so, exposed the sinister workings of Donald Cline.
An incredible story
The incredible and shocking story that Dr. Cline eventually got a suspended sentence but never went to jail is now being unveiled by Netflix in a 90-minute documentary. It is primarily the affected women who have had their say, who were victims of the incredible abuse of trust by the fertility doctor.
Incidentally, “Our Father” was not only produced by Netflix, but also by Blumhouse. The production company has specialized in horror films for many years and has delivered real hits with «Halloween», «Get Out» and the «The Purge» series. The documentary was directed by Lucie Jourdan , who previously worked mainly for television (e.g. on “The Super” or “Out Of The Wild”).
New on Netflix: This horror reboot is a shame — watch the original instead!
