As the second sequel to the horror milestone The Exorcist, William Peter Blatty’s occult crime story The Exorcist III was under immense pressure – both behind the scenes and because of audience anticipation. Pressure that the film could not withstand at first: Although it did bring in respectable box office income, both the press reviews and the reactions of horror fans were initially rather negative. However: For some years now, «The Exorcist III» has been rediscovered and valued as a gem that has previously been sold undervalued — also thanks to a jump scare, which quite a few horror fans count among the best ever .
The consequences of the pressure of expectations behind the scenes are also gradually being eliminated: In 1990, a film version dictated by the studio celebrated its premiere in which various scenes were changed, replaced or removed against the will of the director.
