After huge hits such as » The Jungle Book «, » Beauty and the Beast » and » The Lion King «, Disney continues to rely heavily on live-action adaptations of its own animated classics — but not all of them appear on the big screen for a long time. After the new edition of «Lady and the Tramp » and the modern «Cinderella» adaptation » Sneakerella «, the new » Pinocchio » will also appear directly on the Disney+ streaming service — which is quite surprising given the prominent team in front of and behind the camera.
As the wood carver Geppetto we see none other than Oscar winner Tom Hanks , who once again acts under the direction of «Forrest Gump», «Cast Away» and «The Polar Express» creator Robert Zemeckis . The other cast includes Benjamin Evan Ainsworth , a young star known from the Netflix series Haunted Bly Manor, as Pinocchio, as well as Oscar-nominated Cynthia Erivo («Harriet») and Beauty and the Beast villain Luke Evans . Speakers include Joseph Gordon-Levitt , comedian Keegan-Michael Key and GoodFellas star Lorraine Bracco .
The next 1:1 remake?
For the new «Pinocchio» not only was the design of the eponymous wooden puppet from the 1940 animated film taken over, the teaser trailer above suggests that the new edition resembles remakes like «The Lion King» and is otherwise very close based on the Disney classic , even if there will be at least one or two new characters here and there.
The plot should not be shaken anyway. Here, too, the childless carpenter Geppetto carves a wooden puppet, which he calls Pinocchio and who he wishes were a real boy. When a good fairy then brings the doll to life, Geppetto can hardly believe his eyes the next morning. From now on he wants to raise Pinocchio as a real boy, but there are also many dangers lurking on the way…
