The launch of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is fast approaching. Beginning September 2, 2022, fantasy fans on Amazon Prime can immerse themselves in the world created by JRR Tolkien and brought to life impressively by Peter Jackson in his The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films.
So it goes back to Middle-earth — and yet the world in the series will be different than we know it from the films. Concept artist John Howe emphasized this to Empire , and after all he should know, after all, many of the designs for the look of Amazon’s mega project are his.
A livelier world
«This isn’t the Middle-earth you remember,» Howe explained. “This world is very alive. The Elves do not live hidden in Mirkwood or spend their days in Rivendell. They are busy building kingdoms. The dwarven kingdom of Moria is not an abandoned mine, and the Gray Havens is not an abandoned city. I loved having the opportunity to explore this previously unseen story.”
So while many places in Middle-earth from The Lord of the Rings were marked by decay and decline while the elves prepared to leave this world, everything in Middle-earth from The Lord of the Rings series is still in full bloom — no wonder After all, the Amazon show takes place in the Second Age, which is thousands of years before the Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings plots. And besides, the dark Sauron has not (yet) come into power…
Seafaring Elves
We will not only experience a different Middle-earth, but also discover new parts of it — for example the seas. Movies didn’t take place on water. «We will finally sail the oceans of Middle-earth,» Howe declared, promising intimidating and adventurous seafaring Elves for the series. «They’re almost colonizing the world.» Developing these characters was a lot of fun, and it’s something you haven’t even remotely seen in The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit.
Fan screenings generate excitement
Incidentally, Amazon has already presented individual scenes from «The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power» at an exclusive screening to the toughest audience there can be: in addition to Tolkien experts, there are also hardcore fans of the films and books and operators of fan pages. Of course, they weren’t allowed to reveal anything about the content afterwards — everything was top secret. But they were allowed to share their impression of the footage and their meeting with showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay.

The Tenor: Fans should not worry, the series is in good hands. Of course, it should be remembered that they only saw a few scenes, initial reactions on Twitter are often positive and the participants were of course in a good mood after the exclusive event with catering and cinema screening. Nevertheless: That doesn’t sound bad, and those who are already looking forward to the series will see these impressions as confirmation. But all skeptics can only wait until September 2nd. Then we’ll see if the Amazon series can live up to the hype.
