After Jean-Pierre Jeunet undertook a controversial foray into the blockbuster sector in 1997 with the sci-fi extravaganza » Alien — The Rebirth «, he found his way back to his trademark in 2001: eccentric art house fairy tales. In contrast to Jeunet’s early works such as » Delicatessen «, the German-French co-production » The Fabulous World of Amélie » does not contain any elements of black humor. Instead, the film builds entirely on an unshakable, light-footed optimism.
The concept of an overly charitable dreamer falling in love with a soulmate could easily have ended up in intolerable kitsch. But thanks to a perfectly coordinated interplay of staging ingenuity, a lively Audrey Tautou in the role of her life and Yann Tiersen’s stirring soundtrack — just think of the legendary piano piece «Comptine d`un autre ete» — the film knows all along the line to this day enchant.

Now a young adult, she works as a waitress, enjoying the little things and fleeting moments.
She makes it her mission to share her joie de vivre with others through small gestures. But when Amélie finally falls in love for the first time — with the similarly dreamy Nino ( Mathieu Kassovitz ) — her own shyness gets in the way. And for the first time she needs a little help herself…
