«The best ‘Star Trek’ series in decades» enthusiastic reviews of «Strange New Worlds» — series news

James Dimmock / Paramount+

The Star Trek series universe is booming. After » Star Trek: Discovery » and » Star Trek: Picard «, » Star Trek: Strange New Worlds » is now the third new live-action series from the popular sci-fi franchise within a few years (from animated offshoots such as » Star Trek: Lower Decks » and » Star Trek: Prodigy » not to mention). And that could finally make long-established Trekkies, who couldn’t and can’t do that much with «Discovery» and «Picard», happy again.

Just in time for the US launch of «Strange New Worlds» on May 5th, 2022 at Paramount+, the first reviews of the «Discovery» spin-off have now appeared, which brought us a few years before the events of the «Star Trek» Starship Enterprise original series presenting the adventures of Kirk’s predecessor, Captain Pike ( Anson Mount ). And the previous reviews of the prequel series are full of praise.

Of the 17 reviews currently recorded on Rotten Tomatoes , they are all positive, resulting in a perfect score of 100 percent (!) positive votes on the platform to date (as of May 5, 8:00 p.m.). And the audience rating is not far below at 92 percent (even if only 25 votes have been recorded so far). This is likely to correct a little downward over the coming days and weeks. What is certain, however, is that the latest “Star Trek” series is well received.

Returning to the «Star Trek» roots…

Several critics, including those from websites IGN and Slash Film, agree that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the best Star Trek series in years. Paste Magazine even went so far as to call it the best Star Trek series since Star Trek: The Next Century (aka Star Trek: The Next Generation).

Most people particularly praised the focus on old strengths, which still work amazingly well. This refers to both the more optimistic tone and the episodic structure of the series, which offers us completed space adventures in the individual episodes — just like in the past:

«After spin-offs that have featured harsh gloom or twisted mythologizing, Paramount+ may have cracked the ‘Star Trek’ code with a new series that’s bright, upbeat, and episodic,» says the Hollywood Reporter .

Check out the goosebumps opening credits for «Star Trek: Strange New Worlds»:

Industry publication Variety lists similar merits: «‘Strange New Worlds’ is content to go back to basics: a likeable cast that travels the galaxy, embarks on crazy sci-fi adventures and just has a good time. And this approach works.”

The same is true of website The Wrap , for which «Strange New Worlds» captures the humanism and humor of the original very well. Rolling Stone is also amazed at how well the old Trek formula still ignites after all this time: «The early episodes of ‘Strange New World’ have a little bit of everything the franchise has tried over the years : exploration, diplomacy, action and even comedy.”

… and still fresh impulses

Despite this much-heralded return to Star Trek roots, Strange New Worlds seems to take a few steps forward in all the right places. On the one hand, of course, this applies to the effects that are worth seeing. In the case of Blank Page Beatdown and CBR , however, it can also be read that the series brings a modern sensibility to the development of classic characters and breathes new life into them.

IndieWire , meanwhile, is a little critical of the fact that there are some moments that seem constructed, but ultimately concludes that these are more than bearable since everything else is so wonderfully done. So far, things have only gotten a little more critical on the Giant Freaking Robot side , where the series “only” gets 3 out of 5 possible points on its own value scale. Nevertheless, «Strange New Worlds» is significantly better than the other new «Star Trek» series.

Wait longer in Germany

Of course, the enthusiastic voices about «Star Trek: Strange New Worlds» don’t make waiting for the series any easier. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a while before it starts in Germany.

As before, nothing is known about a German date, so it is still rumored that «Strange New Worlds» will be used as a major launch title when the US streaming service Paramount + finally appears in Germany. However, this should only be the case in the second half of 2022 , according to a recent quarterly report from parent company Paramount Global (via DWDL ).
