“ God’s Favorite Idiot ” is called Clark Thompson ( Ben Falcone ) and he’s a low-level clerk at a tech company. He likes going to the sauna with his dad ( Kevin Dunn ), adores his cats and has a crush on his co-worker Amily ( Melissa McCarthy ) — a completely average guy.
But when he is struck by lightning and suddenly begins to glow unnaturally, Clark, who is otherwise not particularly bright, also realizes that this must be a very special day. A little later, Archangel Chamuel ( Yanic Truesdale ) lands in his garden and explains to him that he was personally chosen by God to save mankind from the apocalypse.
Satan came to earth in the guise of a motorcyclist ( Leslie Bibb ) wearing leather pants and heavy metal shirts to conquer it. So the bewildered Clark has to deliver. His first action is to enlist Amily and other less-than-strong, smart, or heroic colleagues ( Usman Ally , Ana Scotney , Chris Sandiford ) to stand by his side…
«God’s Favorite Idiot» starts on June 15, 2022 worldwide and exclusively on the Netflix streaming service . On this day, part one of the first season will be released in the form of eight episodes for all subscribers. It has not yet been announced when the second half of the season will follow — but the next eight episodes may simply act as season 2.
Ben Falcone for once in the spotlight himself
Melissa McCarthy has been one of Hollywood’s most popular actresses for years. Her biggest comedy successes include «Spy — Susan Cooper Undercover», «Taffe Mädels», «How To Party With Mom» and of course «Bridesmaids», for which she received an Oscar nomination. McCarthy, who comes from a suburb of Chicago, proved that she can also shine in more serious roles in “St. Vincent”, “The Bird” and – again nominated for an Oscar – “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”. Before hitting the big screen, she had long-running roles on the hit TV series Mike & Molly and Gilmore Girls.
McCarthy is usually the star when collaborating with her husband. Ben Falcone is then usually behind the camera as director («The Boss», «Thunder Force», «Superintelligence») and can only be seen as a supporting character. In «God’s Favorite Idiot» he not only directs and – together with McCarthy – writes the script plus produces, but also plays the title character.
Other key parts are provided by McCarthy’s former Gilmore Girls collaborator Yanic Truesdale, Leslie Bibb from Iron Man 1 + 2 and Jupiter’s Legacy, Kevin Dunn from the Transformers series, and Usmann Ally (Suits, A Series of Unfortunate Events”).
