+++ Opinion +++
«I want to be to the cinema what Shakespeare was to the theatre, Marx to politics and Freud to psychology: someone after whom nothing is the same as it used to be,» said the multi -talented Rainer Werner Fassbinder about himself This may seem smug at first, but it shows an immense longing to make a difference, to change something and to be able to leave a legacy. And the filmmaker undoubtedly succeeded:
Although he was only 37 years old, he left behind more than 40 films and two dozen plays — and you can definitely draw a dividing line between «before Fassbinder» and «after Fassbinder» in German cinema . Among the admirers of his work are Martin Scorsese, » Annette » director Leos Carax and » Carol » maker Todd Haynes as well as «Toni Erdmann» director Maren Ade . And so that the circle of those who remember Fassbinder’s work grows, the art house streaming service LaCinetek is now celebrating the German enfant terrible:
» LaCinetek
June 10 marks the 40th anniversary of Fassbinder ‘s death — but the portal is already beginning its Fassbinder focus today. As part of this, ten of his most memorable films and his mammoth series “ Berlin Alexanderplatz ” can be streamed . Thus, all film fans will have the opportunity to experience (again or for the first time) a cross-section of passionate, non-conformist directorial work rarely produced in the film industry.
Fassbinder’s facets
Fassbinder’s films often perform a balancing act between reflecting his own intimate feelings and taking stock of the political climate in Germany . This is usually told using characters in tricky relationships and visualized through concise locations. It is also outstanding that he made many melodramatic films, but even missed this often sluggish genre creative fire.
An apt insight into Fassbinder’s work is offered by his thematically related «FRG trilogy», which can be found in its entirety in the Fassbinder selection at LaCinetek : » The Marriage of Maria Braun » about a woman who was unhappily in love during the post-war years. Inspired by the real fate of the actress Sybille Schmitz , the crime film » Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss » about a burnt-out film star who starts dating a sports reporter. And the satirical dramedy “ Lola ” about a love triangle between a construction inspector, a brothel worker and a corrupt property developer.
Closely related to the FRG trilogy: the social drama “ Fear Eats Soul ” about the attitude towards life of so-called “guest workers”, which can also be found at LaCinetek. From Fassbinder’s earlier work are the improv film » Why is Mr. R. running amok?» ‘ (whose shooting he left after a few days) and ‘ Merchant of the Four Seasons ‘, whose hapless protagonist Fassbinder modeled after a relative, are part of the portfolio.
