When a series is as incredibly successful as the Netflix mystery hit » Stranger Things «, it is inevitable that possible spin-offs will also be considered. Above all, if a format is not stretched out indefinitely, but instead has a clearly defined end for story reasons, other ideas are needed to capitalize on such a success.
An extreme current example here is » Game Of Thrones «, where after the end of the series a handful of offshoots are currently in development. But the world of «Stranger Things» will probably stay with us even after the end of the actual series is imminent…
Top secret spin-off idea
Even if we still have some time left, the big series finale of «Stranger Things» is slowly but surely approaching. The first part of the equally epic and successful fourth season was recently released on Netflix , the rest of the season will follow on July 1, 2022. The already confirmed fifth season will then be the last. It’s not yet clear when it will appear on Netflix.
The FILMSTARTS review of «Stranger Things» Season 4 — Part 1
And while brothers Matt and Ross Duffer , who are behind the popular series , may have their hands full getting the series conclusion off the ground, they’re also thinking a little further ahead. When announcing Season 5, they stated that there were «many exciting stories to tell» in their series universe with «new mysteries, new adventures and new unexpected heroes».
And they confirmed that in an interview with Variety with regard to a potential offshoot, at least a little more clearly – albeit without being really specific: According to this, the Duffer brothers are actually actively working on an idea for a “Stranger Things” spin-off that however, they haven’t revealed it to anyone — not even Netflix. So currently only they know about it — and Mike actor Finn Wolfhard , who apparently guessed the idea correctly according to the Duffers.
«We think everyone — including Netflix — will be surprised by the concept because it’s very, very different,» the Stranger Things masterminds told Variety . The possible spin-off is likely to be very different from «Stranger Things» itself, which makes speculating about the premise all the more difficult. Are we finally getting a full fledged buddy comedy starring fan favorites Steve ( Joe Keery ) and Dustin ( Gaten Matarazzo )? Are we going to relive the whole story from the point of view of a cuddly Demogorgon? Or is it even about a nerve-wracking «Dungeons & Dragons» world championship?
It remains to be seen when we will find out more here and whether the offshoot idea will actually become something. With the continued popularity of the main series, however, the odds are more than good…
