In the conclusion of the official FILMSTARTS review of Bruno Dumont’s «France» , our author Jochen Werner calls the film «an abysmal nihilistic, cutting-edge media satire with an unforgettable Léa Seydoux .»
Like all of the previous works by the director of Diefine Gesellschaft , this one is not easy – despite its glossy surfaces and its only apparent comedic lightness. But France is a challenge that is definitely worth taking on.
«France» will be released in German cinemas nationwide on June 9, 2022.
That’s what «France» is about
France de Meurs ( Léa Seydoux ) is an extremely popular TV journalist and celebrated war correspondent. As a married mother on the side, she leads a very stressful, very demanding life — kept on her toes by her producer and only friend, Lou ( Blanche Gardin ). With her eyes wide open, France accepts that her marriage to her husband Fred ( Benjamin Biolay ) is increasingly falling by the wayside at the expense of her career.
When she hits a poor guy ( Jawad Zemmar ) with her car one day , she and her completely scheduled everyday life are thrown off course. France’s just so glamorous stardom threatens to become her undoing and the trigger of a deep fall. But she’s determined to end the downward spiral by throwing herself into the work, starting over and reinventing herself — albeit this time with irony and a wink…
