EuropaCorp — VALERIAN SAS – TF1 FILMS PRODUCTION / Amazon Prime Video
+++ Opinion +++
» Valerian — The City of a Thousand Planets » is currently included in the Amazon Prime Video subscription and I highly recommend tuning in if you enjoy imaginatively designed space spectacles. The ambitious sci-fi adventure of the French star director Luc Besson («The Fifth Element», «Leon — The Professional») is one of those films that really pisses me off that it flopped so much at the box office.

With a budget of around 177 million US dollars, «Valerian» is the most expensive French film production of all time (and you can tell that from the visually stunning epic). Unfortunately, the mammoth project was only able to bring in $ 225 million. Because the often just as high marketing costs have to be added to the production budget, the ambitious comic adaptation is a big flop. So there will probably never be a sequel.
The majority of critics didn’t find the space adventure particularly good either. According to Rotten Tomatoes , only 47 percent of the trade press rated «Valerian» rather positively. Often Criticized: Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne ‘s Allegedly Brainless Storyline and Lack of Chemistry . But why was «Valerian» still one of the film highlights of 2017 for me?
That’s why «Valerian» on Prime Video is great sci-fi fun
Along with Dune and Blade Runner, Valerian is one of the most visually stunning science fiction films of recent years. Whether foreign alien races, unusual costumes or sweeping super wide shots of sunny beach planets: This film is a feast for the eyes and for that reason alone it is worth seeing. It’s not just the technical quality of the visual effects, but also the design that inspires me so much.
The sci-fi adventure is bright and colorful, making a stark contrast to the rather dark and desaturated Marvel and DC blockbusters that have dominated cinema for years. In places this is quite reminiscent of the colorful planet Pandora from «Avatar», which is why «Valerian» is also a good pastime until the theatrical release of » Avatar 2 «, which will hopefully be released on December 14, 2022 as announced.
EuropaCorp — VALERIAN SAS — TF1 FILMS PRODUCTION «Valerian» offers a lot of strong and colorful pictures.
Yes, the plot might have some weird twists or two, but the setting is still cool. Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are space cops who bring a small but powerful alien to Alpha, the city of a thousand planets. It’s basically a kind of New York in space, a cultural potpourri of all sorts of alien species.
Only that all beings actually coexist peacefully here and use their individual abilities for the common good. But something is wrong, a virus seems to be infiltrating the city and then Laureline is kidnapped by a nasty dictator.
A unique duo
What happens after that is actually not that important. What matters is who it happens to. The two stars, Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, received a lot of criticism, but for me they are one of the big plus points of this film.

As with the look of the film, it is above all the difference between the two that fascinates me. Valerian and Laureline: For me, that’s Han Solo and Leia Organa as runway models. On the one hand, the two always look like they’re taking part in a fashion show, but on the other hand they have such a dry, cool attitude, as if the fate of the universe were passing them by at the speed of light.
The love story between the two may not seem particularly real. But the two are just so crazy that I find it quite believable when there is a spark between the two. The duo sometimes seems as grooved as an old married couple who know each other inside and out, and yet fresh, romantic feelings sprout between the two. A unique constellation that I would have liked to see again. Unfortunately, nothing will come of it, because “Valerian” just flopped too hard for that.
If you are one of the many who didn’t see the sci-fi blockbuster in the cinema then you should take the chance and catch up on Amazon Prime Video.
