Friday Entertainment / Netflix
The fascinating thing about Bollywood productions is often that they serve several genres at once. But in the case of » Gangubai Kathiawadi «, which only started in cinemas around the world in February and has only been available on Netflix for a few weeks , the genre mix proves to be particularly wild: On the one hand, the film is reminiscent of a Disney live Action musicals like » Beauty and the Beast » — really with spectacularly choreographed vocal numbers, opulent sets and colorful costumes. But instead of an enchanted prince, the film based on the true crime non-fiction book «Mafia Queens Of Mumbai» is about forced prostitution and the political fight for the legalization of sex work.
On the one hand , «Gangubai Kathiawadi» as a mafia epic is pretty brutal — the underage women who are often sold by their families are forced into prostitution with torture if necessary, the title heroine is once the entire upper body from the neck to the navel by a woman killer slashed. On the other hand, the film is not only wonderfully colourful, but also decidedly chaste — despite the subject, you don’t even see a kiss…
The (true) story of «Gangubai Kathiawadi»: In the 1950s, Ganga ( Alia Bhatt ), who is abducted and forced into prostitution under threat of violence in the red light district of Mumbai, declares that she will one day take over the entire district . And indeed: With the help of the local mafia boss Rahim Lala ( Ajay Devgn ), she continues to expand her influence in the brothel district of Kamathipura — and finally even fights personally with the Prime Minister for the rights of Indian sex workers…
