Was it worth it? After Will Smith drew attention at the Oscars with a slap in the face, which he gave host Chris Rock live on air and in the middle of the stage, things have been going according to plan for the superstar for the time being. Unfazed by what happened (or perhaps just too shocked to act immediately), the Academy awarded the actor his first Best Actor Oscar for his performance in King Richard , after winning 2002’s Ali and 2007 («The Pursuit of Happiness») went empty handed. A few months later, however, things are not looking too rosy for Smith and his career.
The Hollywood star drew one or two consequences himself after his misconduct, but above all the studios with whom he was planning current collaborations and in some cases even already implemented them turned their backs on him. Which projects will now be taken up at all is uncertain for the time being. And so «King Richard» is at least the last film with Will Smith that we get to see — starting this week on DVD and Blu-ray.

The biopic about the father of the two legendary tennis players Venus and Serena Williams (played by Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton in the film ) was criticized in many places for having been converted into a mere Oscar vehicle for Smith, when in truth it is about the impressive story of the world-famous sisters. Author Janick Nolting praised Will Smith for his best acting performance to date, but in the end awarded no more than 3 out of 5 possible stars in the FILMSTARTS review for two and a half hours of «straightforwardly staged and, in his statement, generic American dream cinema».
