The image of a Germany that quickly shed the misanthropic ideology of the Third Reich after the Second World War is deceptive. Even though the Federal Republic worked its way out of the rubble of the war during the economic miracle, many ideological inherited burdens remained. One of the many examples is paragraph 175, which came into force in 1872, but was tightened up by the National Socialists in 1935 and only abolished in 1994 (!). This paragraph threatened homosexual men with years of imprisonment solely because of their sexual identity.
The drama “ Great Freedom ” tells of the consequences of this paragraph in a way that is as touching as it is fueling anger because of this injustice. Unfortunately, the film only reached fewer than 20,000 people in cinemas — but now «Große Freiheit» is finally available on DVD and Blu-ray , giving it the opportunity to reach a larger audience in home cinema.
