Before scream queen Linnea Quigley screeched her way through movies like The Return of the Living Dead , she appeared in Fairy Tales – a film that only the 1970s could possibly make: Spurred on by the pornography hype of the time, erotic films emerged that chasing after the big trend, but bending so far for a shy cinema audience that nobody is deterred from the outset . What then experienced a brief, violent boom and reached a wide audience (often in both senses of the word) is now genuine “WTF?!” film fodder. Because «Fairy Tales» and similar productions maneuver themselves full steam ahead into a fascinating and strange gray area :
On the one hand, they offer a lot of bare skin and wallow in frivolities. On the other hand, they avoid explicit “action”. Instead, they entice you with ironically silly costumes and amazingly catchy musical interludes. If you’ve pricked up your ears and feel like having a social evening with a movie that constantly oscillates between «embarrassing» and «cheeky»: Good news! “Fairy Tales” recently celebrated its German home cinema premiere – and it was uncut .

«Fairy Tales» is presented on the Blu-ray from the Wicked Vision label in the original stereo soundtrack and in a 5.1 mixdown for extra ear-banging. But there is no synchro! In the Rocky Horror Picture Show style, you can watch the salacious musical with a surprising Texas Blood Court connection only in the original version with optional subtitles.
«Fairy Tales»: The Fairytale Gathering
Sleeping Beauty (Linnea Quigley), Snow White, the sheep keeper Little Bo Peep and various other characters from fairy tales and children’s rhymes have grown up — and feel certain cravings. Luckily for her, a prince ( Don Sparks ) is trying to get a grip on a little problem with his innate scepter. The signs point to Ringelpiez with touching, lascivious rhymes and darn little clothing…
Too much sex & violence: This torture horror was too blatant for the FSK — but it comes unabridged in the home cinema!
Let’s get down to business: «Sexy», let alone «stimulating» are terms that don’t come to mind when watching «Fairy Tales». The outstanding appeal of this 70s oddity lies more in its trashy feel-good factor — which is exponentially increased with the casual audio commentary by screenwriter Frank Ray Perilli and producer Charles Band on the Blu-ray.
But even without the filmmaker’s jokes, «Fairy Tales» is a boozy affair , as director Harry Hurwitz threads a veritable series of jokes. In addition, some of the songs can be heard for real! The highlight is soul and R&B legend Martha Reeves , who had no idea what movie she’d gotten her way into , but pulls off a sizzling number as a voodoo witch.
Interlude between two chainsaw massacres
«Fairy Tales» also lures horror fans with two personal details that also have their fingers in it here : Not only is the erotic fairy tale musical Linnea Quigley’s acting debut — the film was also captured on celluloid by the gifted cameraman Daniel Pearl . So from the man who shot the original chainsaw massacre «Blood Court in Texas» right at the beginning of his career and decades later the remake produced by Michael Bay . Pearl also filmed tons of iconic music videos , so with Fairy Tales you can catch him in an odd career limbo.
«Fairy Tales» is not the only combination of eroticism and Texas massacres . Because soon, Ti West’s » X » will be released in German cinemas, in which a porn crew experiences horror up close and which also brings back bloody memories of the chainsaw cult…
