» The cabinet of Dr. Caligari is not just a horror film classic that every genre fan should have seen at least once in their life, but rather one of the first German cinema milestones. The world premiere of February 1920 is more than 102 years ago. One hundred and two years. To give you a glimpse of how far back that is: while the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy came to an end that same year, women in the US were given the right to vote. Yes, hardly anyone is likely to live who read Robert Wiene ‘s horror tale experienced on screen back then. It is all the more important to keep such cultural assets revived — and that is exactly what is happening with the latest home cinema release of the film.
«The cabinet of Dr. Caligari” will be released on 4K Blu-ray for the first time on May 13, 2022. The set also contains the film on Blu-ray in the sense of backward compatibility, which is often still felt to be necessary, but it is of course worth it for the newly restored 4K version in particular. Also on board is the music version of the horror classic, made by Uwe Dierksen and Hermann Kretschmar in 2019.

«Dr. Caligari»: A fever dream for eternity
It takes a lot to land in a FILMSTARTS all-time leaderboard. However, to be placed in several is an honor that is really only bestowed on absolutely exceptional films — films like «The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari». Because it not only burns itself into memory with one of the 100 greatest shots in film history , on top of that it is also one of the 25 best German films of all time as well as one of the best horror films of all time (for which the FILMSTARTS review, of course, can only give the full five points).
The FILMSTARTS review of «The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari»
At the center of what critic Ulrich Behrens calls it in our review, “a nightmare wrapped in expressionist scenery”, which creates a world of its own between fantasy and reality, between appearance and reality, is a showman ( Werner Krauss ), whose true identity he is secret is. He simply calls himself “Dr. Caligari” – and he would also like to appear as this at the forthcoming fair in order to present the sleepwalker Cesare ( Conrad Veidt ) to his audience.
According to Caligari, the drowsy man has not woken up for 23 years – unless he woke him up himself. Above all, however, the slumbering sight has the gift of not only telling about the past of each person, but also predicting their future. And so one day, during a performance, Cesare prophesies to one of the visitors ( Hans Heinrich von Twardowski ) that he only has to live until dawn — and the murderous goings-on take their course…
