Disney+
After WandaVision, The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, Loki, What If… and Hawkeye, Moon Knight is the first MCU series on Disney+ to essentially complete the Marvel Cinematic Universe does not need. While the previous series mostly focused on characters already known from the film universe, whose stories were retold or retold in alternative realities, the latest superhero adventure on the streaming service stands on its own.

There are also one or two small allusions to the MCU in «Moon Knight». But instead of constantly getting cross-references to other films and series in the franchise, you have to be very careful for the few references in «Moon Knight» (for example, hippopotamus goddess Taweret briefly pronounces the ancestral level in a subordinate clause «Black Panther» on). In fact, detachment from other Marvel adventures wasn’t planned from the start. In typical MCU fashion, there were originally going to be two crossover moments in Moon Knight.
«Moon Knight» director explains: That’s why the MCU references were deleted
Mohamed Diab , the main director of «Moon Knight» explained in an interview with Variety why he and the other series makers decided against the typical MCU crossovers in the end:
“We had a crossover in the very first scene and in the very last scene. But as the story developed and we kept changing the scripts, we thought, ‘We don’t need this.’ All together. It was a collective decision. I kept thinking: That’s a rule. There needs to be a scene at the end that connects to the MCU. But I think [the others] decided , ‘You know what: the surprise is that there isn’t one, and what’s going to make the show unique is that it doesn’t need one.'»
And the surprise worked. The fact that MCU films and series suffer from the so-called Marvel formula, which ensures that every individuality has to submit to the overarching narrative, is a frequently cited criticism of the productions, including the current cinema blockbuster » Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness ”, in which horror cult director Sam Raimi uses his unmistakably wild style in some scenes, but can never completely break free from the shackles of the mega-franchise.
«Moon Knight» shows that series that deviate from the Marvel formula can also be successful and at least doesn’t have to be accused of having squeezed unnecessary MCU cameos into the story. But that’s not the only reason why «Moon Knight» is refreshingly different: The strong focus on the psyche of its main character and the horror elements that appear now and then make the series something special in the MCU (although the recently launched «Doctor Strange 2» is now also has a decent scary factor.)
When does Moon Knight play in the timeline?
With Moon Knight having so few ties to the MCU, it’s also very difficult to clearly position the series in the timeline. However, we already found a hint in episode 1 that makes it clear that the Disney + series must play at least after «Avengers: Endgame».
When does Moon Knight actually play? Explaining how the new Marvel series connects to the rest of the MCU
Also, Disney Plus has a The Marvel Cinematic Universe in Chronological Order category, and that’s where Moon Knight is at the very end.
So, the superhero adventure starring Oscar Isaac takes place after all the other MCU movies and series currently available on Disney+. However , it is not yet known whether «Moon Knight» will play before or after «Doctor Strange 2».
