» Robotech » is set in the future, in which mankind has developed gigantic combat robots from the technology of a once crashed alien spaceship. Now this technology is to be used to defend against an alien invasion. The anime series became a cult in the mid-1980s, resulting in several animated films and later video games. And for years, a major Hollywood live-action feature film has been set to follow.
The project was originally developed at Warner and at times Leonardo DiCaprio was discussed as the lead actor. Sony has been planning the “Robotech” film for several years – originally with “Aquaman” maker James Wan and most recently with Andy Muschietti at the wheel. But the director of the upcoming DC movie The Flash is out now. Instead, Rhys Thomas is now entrusted with the task. He was most recently the formative director of Marvel’s Hawkeye series on Disney+.

Thomas isn’t the only person with a Marvel past behind the project. The script was written by «Iron Man» authors Art Marcum and Matt Holloway , who also just wrote the comic adaptation » Kraven The Hunter » for Sony. However, the «Robotech» script is said to have been revised again by the creators of the Amazon Prime Video series «Comrade Detective» Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka and will certainly now be adapted again with the participation of Thomas.
With a director on board, work should now be in full swing again. Let’s see if it ends up being realized this time and we’ll hear promptly which stars Sony is targeting for the project.
