A real family business
If you look at the cast and crew list of «Hellbender — Growing Up Is Hell», it is immediately apparent that we are dealing with a very unorthodox production model here. The indie horror was written, directed, acted, filmed, edited, and scored by members of a single, relatively small family.
John Adams and his wife Toby Poser wrote and directed the film, along with their daughter Zelda Adams. They also starred themselves plus their second daughter, Lulu Adams. Toby also served as producer and costume designer, John and Zelda operated the cameras, while John alone provided the score, sound and editing.
It wasn’t the first time the Adams-Poser family had undertaken such an extremely laborious project. In the meantime, an extensive catalog of titles has been accumulated in this amazing way. Because even with her previous films «The Deeper You Dig», «The Hatred», «Halfway To Zen», «The Shoot», «Knuckle Jack» and «Rumblestrip» almost all jobs on the set and in the post-production were done by the parents and her daughters themselves.
Judging by the critical acclaim the film has garnered from screenings at major festivals in North America (Fantasia, Fantastic Fest, Chicago, among others) and Europe (Sitges, Stockholm, Razor Reel), it should easily be Adams’ best work to date act family. Horror fans can look forward to it.
