Karoline Herfurth’s ensemble comedy » Beautiful » has been THE surprise at the German box office this year. The cross-country skier, which thanks to outstanding word-of-mouth propaganda has maintained almost constant numbers over weeks and weeks, is currently in third place in the annual charts with a total of more than 1.5 million visitors — and thus only behind the umpteen times more expensive franchise blockbuster » Fantastic Beasts 3 » and » The Batman «.

We think: The success is absolutely deserved — «beautiful» finally got a strong four out of five stars from us:
The FILMSTARTS review of «Beautiful»
But we think Karoline Herfurth’s debut “ SMS für dich ” is even a bit better. Although it only attracted 744,000 viewers to the cinemas in 2016, we already gave it a fantastic 4.5 out of 5 stars back then. So anyone who has now jumped on the Herfurth hype train with «Wunderschön» should definitely make their debut — and if you hurry, Amazon Prime Video subscribers can currently do so at no additional cost. «SMS for you» is available as a subscription until tomorrow:

That’s what «SMS for you» is about: After two years of mourning, the author Clara ( Karoline Herfurth ) still hasn’t gotten over the sudden death of her fiancé. While her roommate Katja ( Nora Tschirner ) does everything to instill fresh courage in her, Clara keeps texting her dead husband to his old cell phone number. What she doesn’t know is that the number has now been reassigned to sports journalist Mark ( Friedrich Mücke ). He finally decides to search for the unknown sender. He is supported by his best friend David ( Frederick Lau )…
The best German RomCom for ages
The plot of «SMS für dich» runs in the usual genre paths, but Karoline Herfurth plants so many small truthful moments to the left and right of it that it doesn’t bother at all: It starts with Clara’s children’s books, which since the death of her man is only about a caterpillar that just can’t stop crying. And then there is also Clara and Katja’s favorite bar — and this is not a high-gloss club so typical of German cinema, but a quaint Berlin corner pub in which the currywurst variations on offer differ solely in the color of the French fries spike.
Karoline Herfurth groundes the well-known Hollywood mechanisms — as director and leading actress alike — with such a disarming naturalness that even one or two cynics in the audience will regain their belief in true love in these 107 enchanting minutes. And so our conclusion is: «Really great romantic cinema — ‘SMS für dich’ doesn’t need to hide itself from its Hollywood role model ‘ Schlaflos in Seattle ‘!»
