Disney and its affiliates
+++ Opinion +++
The Marvel Cinematic Universe will soon be 15 years old. And even after almost 30 films and more and more series, I still can’t get enough of the unprecedented comic mammoth project. Of course, as a huge MCU fan, I can’t deny occasional signs of fatigue and wear and tear. I’m all the happier when the comic forge and its parent company Disney move a little away from the proven Marvel formula and build a few more daring cogs into the well-oiled superhero machinery.
For me, this also applies to large parts of » Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness «. Of course, the 28th MCU adventure is not a thoroughbred horror film, as was teased in advance. «Tanz der Teufel» mastermind and «Spider-Man» director Sam Raimi does indeed bring some of the strengths of his genre roots and makes «Doctor Strange 2» stand out from the Marvel crowd. A highlight here is undoubtedly the controversial Illuminati scene in the middle of the film, which took me on a real rollercoaster ride…
Guest star parade as fan service…
How great was the euphoria when one of the trailers for «Doctor Strange 2» more than clearly indicated that we can look forward to seeing Patrick Stewart again in the film as Professor Charles Xavier, who is not (only) X-Men- leader but (also) head of the Illuminati superhero troupe. So the possibilities for prominent and surprising guest appearances in the multiverse of madness actually seemed almost endless. Corresponding fan theories about alleged cameos from Deadpool, Tom Cruise as Superior Iron Man and many other characters rolled over.
However, some viewers were disappointed with the end result on the screen. Not only is the cameo parade hoped for by many (which also does without Ryan Reynolds and Tom Cruise) largely limited to the one sequence in the Illuminati headquarters of a parallel universe, the heroes who appear here are also made surprisingly short work .
