The plot of «The Painted Bird»: Right at the beginning, the residents of the village in a nameless Eastern European country want to drown the nameless, almost mute boy ( Petr Kotlár ) — after all, as a Jew he would only bring bad luck anyway. But then he is sold to a gypsy instead — and thus begins an odyssey of indescribable horrors, in which the boy always finds accommodation elsewhere (e.g. with Harvey Keitel and Stellan Skarsgård ), but always suffers only unbelievable cruelty.
He is beaten, exploited, sexually abused by men and women, even the church eventually throws him into a cesspool. Only in the sniper Mitka ( Barry Pepper ) does he find something like a fatherly friend — and from him he also learns how to kill people particularly efficiently…
