For 31 years, religion teacher Nancy Stokes ( Emma Thompson ) has enjoyed a solid but sexually unfulfilling marriage. After her retirement and the death of her husband, the 55-year-old finally wants to find out what good sex is and what an orgasm actually feels like. Without further ado, she books the young call boy Leo Grande ( Daryl McCormack ), with whom she meets in a hotel room.
Little by little, the charming acquaintance can help Nancy overcome her insecurities. On the other hand, Nancy always lures her counterpart out of her reserve. In this way, the two grow closer and finally reach an intimacy that goes beyond the purely physical — and which soon threatens to cross borders that should better not be crossed…
Strong acting cinema
In a chamber play-like setting, “Animals” director Sophie Hyde once again deals with sexuality and gender roles in a precise manner in “ Meinestunden mit Leo ”. The result is a film peppered with a lot of dry humor, which lives above all through the strong duo of leading actors and their chemistry.
As two-time Academy Award-winning veteran (for Howard’s End and Sense and Sensibility) and Harry Potter fortune-telling veteran Emma Thompson is on top form on her journey to new body awareness, her co-star Daryl McCormack (» Peaky Blinders», «The Wheel of Time»), behind the sovereign facade of his character, his vulnerability subtly shines through again and again.
