He was completely left out of the first trailer for » Thor 4: Love And Thunder «, in the second trailer he is now (alongside the bare Thor buttocks) what everyone is talking about: Of course we are talking about the villain Gorr The God Butcher, played by Christian Bale .
But the Marvel fans on the Internet are not really unanimous when it comes to Gorr: does he have the potential to become an MCU villain from the league of Loki, Thanos or currently Scarlet Witch? Or is Marvel once again giving away a great actor for an interchangeable villain role (like Jeff Bridges did back then in «Iron Man»)?
Gorr in «Thor 4»: Top or Flop?
In the video above, our YouTube moderator and Marvel expert Sebastian weighs the pros and cons, but is still quite skeptical overall. And that’s mainly due to the fact that Gorr neither fits visually to his counterpart in the comics (which you could still get over) nor thematically to an apparently slapstick film like «Thor 4» .
Because the Gorr in the comics is a brutal killer who tortures and torments his victims and will stop at nothing to achieve his goal — the murder of all gods and goddesses. Does that fit into a film that will certainly be as humorous as » Thor 3 » and in which love and divine midlife crises are also supposed to play an important role?

On the other hand, Marvel has proven a number of times that while you can take inspiration from comics, you can also tell compelling stories (which may even appeal to a slightly wider audience) with very own and free interpretations.
Quite apart from the fact that Christian Bale is not known for nothing for his numerous great performances in films such as «American Psycho», «The Machinist», «The Fighter» or the «The Dark Knight» trilogy and Gorr certainly has the necessary depth and can give seriousness.
Ultimately, we’ll just have to wait and see here until «Thor 4: Love And Thunder» hits German cinemas on July 6, 2022.
What else is in the trailer?
In the video above, Sebastian also goes into many other details in the trailer. For example, he theorizes that Gorr’s sword and Dane Whitman’s (Kit Harington) Black Blade from the «Eternals» credits scene could be related.
And he goes into Jane Foster ( Natalie Portman ), whose transformation into the goddess of thunder was not explained in the second trailer either. Could she have been one of Thanos’ victims and thereby somehow proved worthy? This is suggested by the scene where Jane and Thor ( Chris Hemsworth ) disagree on how much time has passed since they last met.
Or is «Thor 4» possibly a film in which the Marvel Multiverse plays an important role? Because the first meeting of Thor and Jane-as-Thor we see in the trailer in two different versions (once Thor wears a helmet and different armor).
Marvel Studios Left front: death; right front: Living Tribunal; middle right: the watcher
And then there’s the scene that shows Jane in a mysterious room full of statues. There we see cosmic entities like the Watcher (known from » What If? «), the Living Tribunal ( as Easter Egg in «Loki» and «Doctor Strange 2» ) and Death personified, as well as other entities that cannot be precisely identified. This attitude also suggests that «Thor 4» could play an important role in the future of the MCU.
