Eleven ( Millie Bobby Brown ) and her friends have already had to contend with some dangerous monsters from the dark parallel world of the Upside Down in » Stranger Things » — from the Demogorgons to the gigantic mind flayers. But none was arguably as menacing and scary as the villain from Season 4 : The seemingly unstoppable Vecna penetrates the minds of his victims and exploits their traumas to finally kill them in a cruel way.
The fact that Vecna isn’t as animalistic as his predecessors from the Upside Down, but can speak and act very consciously, only makes the horror even worse. Undoubtedly, his disfigured appearance and the production process behind it also contribute to this…
A monster to touch
Unlike Mind Flayers and Co., Vecna doesn’t come from the computer. In fact, the creature was brought to life with 95 percent hand-made effects , as Stranger Things co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed at a Netflix event (via The Wrap ). Only a few shots — especially when it came to Vecna’s inhuman abilities — were occasionally helped with CGI.
This not only makes the horror more tangible and scary for the audience in front of the screens, but also had the side effect during shooting that the actors and actresses on the set really had someone in front of them this time and could see directly the evil power their characters had got to do — which according to the Duffers also had a very positive effect on the performances.

In order to bring the «real Vecna» to life, its actor (who should not be revealed here for spoiler reasons) had to endure an elaborate prosthesis and mask torture that took five to nine hours, starting early in the morning. After several hours of shooting, it took another hour to get the actor out of the 20-kilo Vecna suit.
Make-up pro Barrie Gower , who was already responsible for the appearance of the Night King in » Game Of Thrones » and the burn victims in » Chernobyl «, was brought on board to implement the eerie look . According to the Duffer brothers, Vecna is now also a perfect blend of these two works by Gower. In fact, it can hardly be described any better.
