«Gone with the Wind» takes place shortly before, during and after the American Civil War. The southerner Scarlett O’Hara ( Vivien Leigh ) grows up in a sheltered environment, her father Gerald ( Thomas Mitchell ) owns a cotton plantation and is accordingly wealthy. The only problem in Scarlett’s life is her unhappy love for Ashley Wilkes ( Leslie Howard ), who is engaged to his cousin Melanie Hamilton ( Olivia de Havilland ).
But times are changing, the Civil War claims the first casualties in Scarlett’s environment and while the South is increasingly overrun by Union soldiers, the spoiled young woman learns how hard life can really be. While still dreaming about Ashley, she also meets swashbuckling opportunist Rhett Butler ( Clark Gable ) and experiences many passionate highs and tragic lows with him — long after the war is over.
