Andy Kaufman ( Jim Carrey ) wanders the American west coast in the early 70s and tries his hand at being a stand-up comedian. But his bizarre comedy has nothing to do with the generally popular superficial amusement, but instead builds on anti-humor — and many people don’t like it at all. However, when manager George Shapiro ( Danny DeVito ) catches the eye of Kaufman, the comedy eccentric’s tide begins to turn.
From now on he can hardly save himself from appearances, whether in the wrestling ring or on talk shows. However, he does not only make friends with his condescending comments, which neither his employers nor his viewers are immune to. He always hovers between genius and madness, and you never really know: is he really serious or is it all just for show? Are you allowed to do something like that, regardless of whether it’s staged or not? In the end, it’s not surprising that no one wants to believe him when he announces that he’s seriously ill…
