The Hunger Games Spin-Off A Song of Birds and Snakes is out in US theaters on November 17, 2023! The Lionsgate film studio has now announced this at CinemaCon, an important trade fair for cinema operators. The next part of the dystopian saga will appear almost exactly eight years after the theatrical release of the last offshoot » Mockingjay — Part 2 «. However, «The Song of Birds and Snakes» will not tie in with its events. The new film is a prequel to the previously known story.
That’s what the Hunger Games prequel is all about
The official synopsis reads: “In this return to ‘The Hunger Games,’ years before he became the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow sees his chance when he is chosen to be Lucy Gray Bird, the female tribute District 12 to serve as a mentor.”
Studiocanal GmbH / Murray Close A Song of Birds and Serpents will tell the backstory of President Snow (played by Donald Sutherland in the Hunger Games films).
So it will again be about one of the dreaded Hunger Games and the later President Snow will be the protagonist. No surprise, after all, The Song of the Bird and the Snake is an adaptation of the 2020 prequel novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins . Together with Michael Arndt («Star Wars 7») and Michael Lesslie («Macbeth»), she is also responsible for the screenplay of the film adaptation. With Francis Lawrence , the director of «Hunger Games 2 — 4» is again in charge of the production.

According to The Hollywood Reporter , a short teaser showing a bird and a snake against a wintry background was also shown at the CinemaCon presentation . In addition, the sentence was displayed: «In 2023 the world will know who is the bird and who is the snake».
At the moment there are no details about the cast of the new «Panem» movie. Jennifer Lawrence will definitely not be returning. After all, her character Katniss Everdeen isn’t even alive at the time of the prequel storyline.
There is also no German theatrical release yet. «Tribute von Panem: The Song of Birds and Snakes» (as is usual for blockbusters) will probably land in Germany one day before the US date, i.e. on November 16, 2023. But that hasn’t been confirmed yet.
