Various villains are released from prison to do secret and dangerous jobs for the government: Superhero fans not only know this from the comics, but also from “ Suicide Squad ” and “ The Suicide Squad ” by Warner and DC, among others. Now the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is getting its own suicide squad: the Thunderbolts .
There had been indications of this in previous MCU films and series. And it wasn’t until late 2021 that a rumor began circulating that a «Thunderbolts» movie would go into production in 2023 . It looks like this rumor has now come true. As the US industry magazine Deadline first announced, a director has now been found for “Thunderbolts”: Jake Schreier (“Robot & Frank”, “Margo’s Traces”).
While Schreier is new to the superhero genre ( Deadline says his ideas for Thunderbolts blew Marvel executives away), Thunderbolts was written by a man with MCU experience, Black Widow writer Eric pearson . In addition, Avengers mastermind Kevin Feige is of course on board as a producer.
Who will join the Thunderbolts?
So three of the most important names behind the camera have already been determined, but who will be in front of the camera is not yet known. There’s a whole bunch of names that come into play though — pretty much any super villain and anti-heroine who hasn’t been killed in their previous appearances. Deadline has also already learned that some MCU stars have been contacted, but cannot give specific names.
Yelena Belova ( Florence Pugh ) from Black Widow and Hawkeye, Taskmaster ( Olga Kurylenko ), also known from Black Widow, Ghost ( Hannah John-Kamen ) from Ant-Man and the Wasp, Abomination (Tim Roth) from «The Incredible Hulk», «Shang-Chi» and «She-Hulk» or John Walker aka US Agent (Wyatt Russell) and Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) from «The Falcon and the Winter Soldier» would certainly be possible .
Yelena Belova and John Walker have also been contacted by a person who could well act as the string puller behind the Thunderbolts: Valentina Allegra de Fontaine ( Julia Louis-Dreyfus ) is currently apparently putting together a team in the MCU. The Contessa has previously appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Black Widow.
Thunderbolts without Thunderbolts
Actually, the leader and founder of the Thunderbolts is someone else: General Thaddeus «Thunderbolt» Ross gives the team its name in the first place. However , since William Hurt , who previously played Ross in the MCU, passed away in March 2022, the team will probably only be named after him.
