Dolph Lundgren , now 64 , is an action film icon of the ’80s and ’90s, appearing in several installments of the Universal Soldier franchise in addition to his iconic role as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV . His stardom began to wane in the mid-1990s, until Sylvester Stallone finally cast him in the first installment of the Expendables series. As a result, Dolph Lundgren landed roles in other blockbuster franchises such as Creed & Aquaman.
With “ Castle Falls ” (from May 19th as VoD and from May 26th on DVD and Blu-ray) Dolph Lundgren also presents his seventh directorial work. In the action thriller, of course, he is also in front of the camera himself — and fights with martial arts star Scott Adkins («Pay Day») in a hospital shortly before the blow-up over a bag with three million dollars. In the interview, however, he also reveals initial information about the plot of » Expendables 4 » and what he thinks of the derogatory comments by the German trash director Uwe Boll…
FILM STARTS: In «Castle Falls» you go against the general trend towards more CGI and focus on hand-made action…
Dolph Lundgren: I love to combine action and drama in my films. In my work as a director, I pay a lot of attention to realism, i.e. to the fact that things can also happen in real life. We have fights and shootouts, but I also focus on the characters and their interactions.
FILM STARTS: What is the biggest challenge in being in front of and behind the camera at the same time?
Dolph Lundgren: First of all, it’s definitely a challenge because you can’t forget or neglect your own performance. You have to pay attention to your dialogue and how you look. I also have two confidants who look at the monitor. Also, you have to take care of yourself so you don’t get tired, because both together is really a lot of work. I was able to do that well on Castle Falls because Scott Adkins is the actual protagonist and I’m only playing the second lead, so I didn’t have to do everything. This also has been good.
