Especially the opening credits of the first two «Star Trek» series » Starship Enterprise » and » Starship Enterprise: The Next Century » are legendary. And even today, many Trekkies can’t get the title tunes of » Deep Space Nine » and » Voyager » out of their heads. The more modern series from the sci-fi universe may present far more spectacular images, but in terms of musical catchiness and uniqueness, they can hardly keep up with the classic «Trek» sounds.
It is perhaps even for the best that the new series » Star Trek: Strange New Worlds » was decided not to create a completely independent new theme. Instead, composer Jeff Russo («Star Trek: Picard,» «Fargo») takes the iconic ’60s Star Trek original series tune and re-arranges it into his own intro melody — something that many fans of the series will appreciate Franchises should give you goosebumps. Not least because the well-known sounds are combined with a very familiar voice-over and breathtaking modern space images .
But it’s best to just take a look at the opening credits for «Strange New Worlds», which were published online a few days before the US start of the series:
Old meets new
The fact that the music in «Star Trek: Strange New Worlds» sounds the way it does is of course not an arbitrary decision, but fits perfectly with the plot of the series. It starts just a few years before the first «Star Trek» series and takes us on the early adventures of the starship Enterprise under the command of Kirk’s predecessor, Captain Christopher Pike. He also speaks the introductory words in the opening credits and is played here — as in season 2 of » Star Trek: Discovery » — by Anson Mount . There is also a reunion with Pike’s number 1 Una Chin-Riley ( Rebecca Romijn ) and Science Officer Spock ( Ethan Peck ).
Like the opening credits to «Star Trek: Strange New Worlds», the series itself is supposed to combine contemporary sci-fi spectacle with a classic «Star Trek» feeling. It should also contribute to the fact that no really continuous story is told over an entire season, but that we – just like in the past – are more concerned with adventures in foreign worlds that are completed per episode. And in the already confirmed second season of «Strange New Worlds» we can also look forward to a comeback from James T. Kirk himself — this time, however, «Vampire Diaries» star Paul Wesley slips into his skin.
But first season 1 is coming up: “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” starts on May 5, 2022 on the Paramount+ streaming service. It is not yet available in this country, but it should come to us in the course of the year. Perhaps the new «Star Trek» series will only then find its way to Germany, so far there is at least no information about a local release date.
