There has been much debate in recent days about what the verdict in the publicly broadcast defamation lawsuit between ex-husbands Johnny Depp and Amber Heard means — for the US justice system, for the #MeToo movement, for future lawsuits involving social Media opinions are increasingly spilling into the courtroom…
… and it probably wasn’t that at all: Amber Heard’s lawyers have already announced that they will appeal the verdict and want to appeal to the next instance. And then it all starts all over again.
But until then, there is also the question of how Johnny Depp’s career will continue: He himself said that the verdict » would have given him back his life » and that » the best is yet to come «. But has he now been rehabilitated in one fell swoop in the eyes of Hollywood officials? Or will he continue to struggle in the blockbuster business after being kicked out of Fantastic Beasts 3 ? After all, Depp has only appeared in smaller films, mostly produced outside of the Hollywood system, in recent years.
Another Pirates movie starring Johnny Depp is coming…
The wide-reaching US magazine PEOPLE has now spoken to a former Disney manager about the possibility that Johnny Depp will possibly slip into his Oscar-nominated role of pirate captain Jack Sparrow for a sixth time — and for the insider interviewed, the answer seems obvious to lie:
» I absolutely believe there will be a reboot with Johnny as Captain Jack after the verdict. There’s just too much potential for a box-office treasure featuring a well-loved character that’s deeply woven into Disney culture. Now that Jerry Bruckheimer has landed huge success with Tom Cruise in ‘ Top Gun 2: Maverick ,’ there is a great appetite to bring back Hollywood stars in massively-popular franchises.»
… or not (at least not as the main actor)
However, the matter does not seem so clear and simple to us. Just a few months ago we published an article explaining why we think Johnny Depp will never play Jack Sparrow again . And the verdict didn’t change that much at first. For one thing, a lot of things came out during the trial (including a number of drug-related stories) that Disney’s marketing department might not like. On the other hand, as I said, the matter is not yet over — and no studio can afford a 200 million or more dollar production, where it is not clear whether the jury in the next instance will decide differently.
Consistent with this is what another insider who has worked on previous films in the series and also spoke to PEOPLE said: » It’s not very likely that Depp will come back as a lead. They probably do a ‘ Pirates 6 ‘, but then with Margot Robbie or something as Jack Sparrow’s daughter. Then it would be likely that they would also do a cameo with Depp as a test. «
So the most likely possibility would be: A «Pirates of the Caribbean» reboot with a different main character, in which Johnny Depp may also appear, but then only in such a short role that you could cut it out again if the worst came to the worst…
