Paul Greengrass («Bourne» films, «Captain Phillips») is directing the historical action drama The Hood , starring Benedict Cumberbatch . The project has already been compared to Ridley Scott’s “ Gladiator ” and above all to Mel Gibson’s “ Braveheart ”.
Because like «Braveheart» it’s about a rebellion in the Middle Ages against the English crown. In the story, set a few decades after the events of Mel Gibson’s historical drama, it is not the Scots who rise up, but the English peasants. When the crown, in need of money after a long war against France, raises a new poll tax that every citizen has to pay, the peasants rebel. Benedict Cumberbatch plays a man who becomes the leader of the revolt in the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381.
Benedict Cumberbatch as Wat Tyler?
Even if there are no further details as part of the project announcement via the industry magazine Deadline , we assume that Cumberbatch should play Wat Tyler based on this description. He was the figure that can best be described as the leader of the real uprising. He even led the peasants as far as London, where they were able to invade the Tower.
Wat Tyler was also a man who liked to talk and was very confident in himself — which suits Benedict Cumberbatch well. He is currently playing such a role – albeit in a completely different context and setting, of course – in “ Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness ”. In popular culture, Wat Tyler has so far been present primarily in numerous songs but also in books. Streets and parks are also named after him in Great Britain. A film is actually overdue, so we’ve decided: «The Hood» shouldn’t be a film about any peasant uprising leader, but about Wat Tyler.
It is not yet known when «The Hood» will be released. The project was presented at the Cannes Film Festival to make it attractive for international distributors to buy the rights.
