The wild multiverse, which the title of the current MCU blockbuster » Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness » announces so promisingly, caused a lot of fan theories in the run-up to the theatrical release — even by Marvel standards. Especially when one of the trailers contained Patrick Stewart’s voice and thus hinted at Professor X, there was of course a lot of speculation as to which stars and Marvel characters would end up in the film as well. A very hot candidate was Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool , which some fans thought they recognized in the reflection of a shard in the trailer.
We now know: No, Deadpool didn’t make it into «Doctor Strange 2», but that doesn’t mean that such an appearance wasn’t discussed…
The «Doctor Strange 2 author on Deadpool
Michael Waldron , the screenwriter of «In The Multiverse Of Madness», has now revealed in an interview with ComicBook.com that he and the others responsible for the film were meanwhile really considering a Deadpool cameo:
«Yes, we talked about it. I think we talked about everything on this film. So it would have been crazy not to bring up [the Deadpool issue]. In the end it just didn’t feel right.»
It only seems logical that Michael Waldron at least briefly discussed all possible characters that could be considered for guest appearances with the MCU executives. But Deadpool was probably just one of many who didn’t make it into the film because it just didn’t feel right. In the end there were a whole series of other Marvel cameos, even if some fans would certainly have wished for more of them…
The cameos in Doctor Strange 2 explained
The reasoning that Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool didn’t quite fit into Doctor Strange 2 is understandable. Because the brutal anti-hero likes to take over the whole event with his escalating meta-humor and might have run the risk of becoming a distracting disruptive factor. On the other hand: A frequently mentioned criticism of «Doctor Strange 2» is that it just doesn’t offer enough madness . A Deadpool could have silenced the critics, at least on this point, like Scarlet Witch did a certain screaming superhero, whom we won’t name here for spoiler reasons.
Tom Cruise isn’t in the MCU movie either
The only cameo that was arguably more eagerly awaited than Deadpool was Tom Cruise . There was speculation that a certain glowing figure in the trailer would be the so-called Superior Iron Man, played by the Hollywood superstar. Anyone who has seen «Doctor Strange 2» knows that this is a completely different character. Who that is and what the chances of a Tom Cruise appearance really were, we have broken down in detail in the following article:
